The Book of Longing

Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen's first book of new poetry in two decades - a major international publishing event

Internationally celebrated for his writing and his music, Leonard Cohen is one of the great and most consistently daring artists of our time. The Book of Longing is his eagerly awaited new collection of poems, following his highly acclaimed 1984 title, The Book of Mercy, and his hugely successful 1993 publication, Stranger Music. The Book of Longing contains line drawings by the author, which interact in exciting and unexpected ways on the page with poetry that is timeless, meditative and at times darkly humorous. The book gathers together all the elements that have brought Cohen's artistry with language worldwide recognition.

'Cohen assaults the reader with words, images, pyrotechnics and love . . . highly personal and eminently readable' Toronto Star

'A writer of terrific energy and colour . . . a Rabelaisian comic' Observer

'Leonard has that wonderful ability to make us smile as we are staring into the abyss. I think he is probably the best lyricist in the world today' Don Henley

Leonard Cohen was born in Montreal in 1934. He attended McGill University and published his first collection of poetry, The Spice Box of Earth, in 1956. Since then he has published eleven books, including two novels, The Favourite Game (1963) and Beautiful Losers (1966). He has made seventeen albums, the latest being Dear Heather (2004). Numerous tribute albums, in many languages, have celebrated his songs. His work is known and loved throughout the world.
