Penguin By DesignA Cover Story 1935-2005Phil BainesThe history of Penguin through its covers.
Since the creation of the Penguin paperback in 1935, the cover has been constantly evolving. In this highly illustrated and attractive book, Phil Baines traces the changes in cover art and style, and explores the forces that influence decisions - from the vision of one designer or a trend in British design (whether it be architecture or typography), to the branding of the publisher or commercial imperative. Covering Penguins and Pelicans, reference, classics and more, Penguin by Design shows how covers really work. Phil Baines is a graphic designer and a Senior Lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. He is also a respected designer of typefaces, including CanYou? and Vere Dignum. He is the author and designer of Type & Typography (with Andrew Haslam) and Signs, Lettering in the Environment (with Catherine Dixon). |
